Marshawn Feltus: Bringing Yoga to Chicago’s West Side

By Sharon Steffensen

Congratulations to Marshawn Feltus, a graduate of the Entrepreneurial Training Program (ETP) led by the Illinois Small Business Development Center at Bethel New Life on Chicago’s West Side. Bethel New Life is a community center in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood that invests in people and communities. Marshawn’s business plan focused on a career in teaching yoga. At the graduation on April 9, after a welcoming address by Illinois Lt. Governor Sheila Simon and other speakers, Marshawn, who had been voted to be the spokesperson for the 27 graduates, spoke briefly about the program and his own plans, and, by the end of his talk, had the audience straightening their spines and taking deep breaths.

Marshawn is currently in teacher training at the Chicago Yoga Center to become certified as a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT). He plans to teach classes at Bethel New Life and other West Side venues, a part of the city where, he commented, yoga is currently nonexistent. Meanwhile, Marshawn is conducting some online classes and private sessions.

Readers may remember Marshawn from the cover of the March–April 2010 issue of YOGAChicago. We featured a story about the yoga program at the Illinois River Correctional Center in Canton, Illinois, initiated by Bartosz Leszczynski, who was an inmate at the prison. (Many yoga studios, teachers, and students donated mats for the program after reading the story.) Marshawn, who served eighteen years and nine months in Illinois Department of Corrections facilities, was one of the teachers that Bartosz had trained, and his love for yoga continued after his release in 2011. Marshawn is also on the YOGA Chicago staff as a distributor of the magazine.

On Saturday, June 29, 11–3 p.m., Marshawn will officially launch his yoga business, called A.C.T. Yoga (Awareness, Change, Triumph) with a combination yoga workshop and business expo that will also highlight the businesses of other entrepreneurs from his ETP class. The event, organized by Marshawn, will be held at Bethel New Life, 1140 N. Lamon, Chicago, and will also include a presentation on nutrition by faculty from University of Illinois Extension, chair massage, aromatherapy, musical entertainment, and food. For more information, call Marshawn at 312.451.4554 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. or email him at marshawn.feltus@gmail.
